Bike kar in Nepal 2083 is the annual vehicle tax on a motorcycle or scooter for FY 2083/84 (mid-July 2026 to mid-July 2027). It is set by your province, not by the federal government, so a 150cc bike pays Rs 4,300 in Karnali and Rs 5,100 in Koshi. This guide gives each province's own motorcycle and electric-bike rates, when the kar is due, and the fine for paying late. The Nepal vehicle tax calculator on this site was built from the same finance acts and vehicle acts, so the figures here and the calculator agree.
What is bike kar, and who sets it?
"Bike kar" is how most riders say सवारी साधन कर (vehicle tax) on a two-wheeler. Since federalism, each of the seven provinces collects it under its own vehicle and transport act and sets the rates in its annual finance act (आर्थिक ऐन). That is why the amounts, the due date and the fine all change depending on where the bike is registered. Six provinces have a Finance Act 2083 in force. Sudurpashchim had not passed its 2083/84 budget as of 27 September 2026 and is collecting at its 2082/83 rates by official notice.
Nepali terms you will see at the transport office
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| सवारी साधन कर | The annual vehicle tax itself, charged by engine cc (or by motor power or price for an electric bike). |
| नवीकरण दस्तुर | The bluebook renewal fee, a separate small charge of Rs 200 or Rs 300 for a motorcycle. |
| जरिवाना | The fine. For late tax it is a percentage of the tax. A late renewal adds its own surcharge on the renewal fee. |
| ब्लुबुक | The bluebook, the vehicle registration certificate. It shows the date your registration runs to, which is where every deadline starts. |
| आर्थिक ऐन | The province's finance act, which sets that year's rates. |
How much is bike kar in each province for FY 2083/84?
The cc bands are not the same in every province, so each province's own table is shown below. A band's top number is included in it: "126–150cc" means above 125cc up to and including 150cc. Check the cc printed in your bluebook, not the model name. For a side-by-side view, see the vehicle tax by province tables on the calculator page.
Koshi (renewal fee Rs 200)
| Engine capacity | Annual tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 125cc | Rs 3,100 |
| 126–150cc | Rs 5,100 |
| 151–200cc | Rs 6,500 |
| 201–250cc | Rs 8,000 |
| 251–400cc | Rs 11,000 |
| Above 400cc | Rs 20,000 |
Koshi changed its table for 2083/84: the old single 150–250cc band (Rs 6,200) was split into 151–200cc and 201–250cc. Owners of 200cc bikes can compare provinces in the 200cc bike tax guide.
Madhesh (renewal fee Rs 300)
| Engine capacity | Annual tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 125cc | Rs 3,000 |
| 126–160cc | Rs 5,000 |
| 161–250cc | Rs 6,500 |
| 251–400cc | Rs 11,000 |
| Above 400cc | Rs 20,000 |
Bagmati (renewal fee Rs 300)
| Engine capacity | Annual tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 125cc | Rs 3,000 |
| 126–150cc | Rs 5,000 |
| 151–225cc | Rs 6,500 |
| 226–400cc | Rs 12,000 |
| 401–650cc | Rs 25,000 |
| Above 650cc | Rs 35,000 |
A Bagmati-only walkthrough with more worked examples is in the motorcycle tax in Nepal guide.
Gandaki and Lumbini (renewal fee Rs 300)
The two provinces have identical motorcycle tables for 2083/84.
| Engine capacity | Annual tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 125cc | Rs 3,000 |
| 126–150cc | Rs 5,000 |
| 151–225cc | Rs 6,500 |
| 226–400cc | Rs 11,000 |
| 401–650cc | Rs 20,000 |
| Above 650cc | Rs 30,000 |
Karnali (renewal fee Rs 200)
| Engine capacity | Annual tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 125cc | Rs 2,700 |
| 126–150cc | Rs 4,300 |
| 151–250cc | Rs 5,500 |
| 251–400cc | Rs 10,000 |
| 401–650cc | Rs 16,000 |
| Above 650cc | Rs 20,000 |
Karnali's act writes each band as "from X to Y", so an exact 125cc, 150cc, 250cc, 400cc or 650cc appears in two bands. The calculator puts an edge value in the lower band, so 150cc pays Rs 4,300 and 250cc pays Rs 5,500.
Sudurpashchim (renewal fee Rs 300, 2082/83 rates)
| Engine capacity | Annual tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 125cc | Rs 2,800 |
| 126–150cc | Rs 5,000 |
| 151–250cc | Rs 6,500 |
| 251–400cc | Rs 11,000 |
| 401–650cc | Rs 20,000 |
| Above 650cc | Rs 30,000 |
These are the Finance Act 2082 rates, collected until Sudurpashchim passes a 2083/84 finance act. If the new act raises a rate, the higher rate applies only from the date it takes effect, not to tax already paid. The Rs 300 renewal fee is the 2081 act's private rate; the 2082 act lists only public-vehicle rates, at the same amount.
Most provinces also add an age surcharge on bikes more than 15 years old, and third-party insurance, a compulsory national charge, is paid on top in every province (see below).
How much is bike kar on an electric bike?
Electric scooters and motorcycles are not taxed by cc. Six provinces tax them by motor power in watts; Madhesh, from 2083/84, taxes them by price. The renewal fee is the same as for a petrol motorcycle in each province.
- Koshi: up to 350W Rs 1,800; 351–1,000W Rs 2,000; 1,001–1,500W Rs 2,500; 1,501–2,000W Rs 3,000; above 2,000W Rs 4,000.
- Madhesh (by price): up to Rs 2.5 lakh, Rs 2,000; up to Rs 3.5 lakh, Rs 3,000; above Rs 3.5 lakh, Rs 5,000. The price is the customs value plus duties for an import, or the VAT-bill price including VAT otherwise.
- Bagmati and Gandaki: up to 50W Rs 1,000; 51–350W Rs 1,500; 351–1,000W Rs 2,000; 1,001–1,500W Rs 2,500; above 1,500W Rs 3,000. Bagmati's 2083/84 increase of Rs 1,500 applied to electric cars up to 50 kW, not to electric two-wheelers.
- Lumbini: up to 500W exempt; 501–1,000W Rs 2,500; 1,001–1,500W Rs 3,000; above 1,500W Rs 3,500. Private electric vehicles get 20% off the tax, but Lumbini allows only one concession at a time, so a late EV owner gets either the 20% rebate or the fine waiver described below, not both.
- Karnali: one table covers every private electric vehicle: up to 500W Rs 1,000; up to 1kW Rs 1,500; up to 1.5kW Rs 2,000; up to 3kW Rs 3,000; up to 10kW Rs 5,000, rising in further bands to Rs 30,000 above 200kW.
- Sudurpashchim (2082/83 rates): up to 50W exempt; 51–350W Rs 1,000; 351–1,000W Rs 1,700; 1,001–1,500W Rs 2,500; above 1,500W Rs 3,500.
When is bike kar due, and what is the जरिवाना for paying late?
Every deadline is counted from the date your registration runs to (or from Chaitra end in Karnali and Sudurpashchim, where that is earlier), printed in the bluebook. The fine (जरिवाना) is a percentage of the tax only, and it steps up in bands rather than growing every month:
| Province | When the tax is due | Fine on the tax if late |
|---|---|---|
| Koshi | 90 days after the bluebook date, but not later than Asar end | 10% within the same fiscal year; 20% from the next one |
| Madhesh | Within the renewal period: 3 months after the bluebook date | 5% for the first 30 days, 10% for the next 45 (to day 75), 20% to the fiscal year end, then 30% for each later fiscal year, up to five |
| Bagmati | 3 months after the bluebook date | 5% for the first 30 days, 10% from day 31 to day 75, 20% to the fiscal year end, then 32% for each later fiscal year, up to five |
| Gandaki | 90 days after the bluebook date | 5%, 10% and 20% on the same day bands in the first year; then 40%, 60% and 80% in the next three fiscal years, and 100% after that |
| Lumbini | 90 days after the bluebook date or Asar end, whichever comes first | 20% to the fiscal year end; then 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% and 120% for each of the next five fiscal years |
| Karnali | The bluebook date or Chaitra end, whichever comes first, plus 90 days with no fine | 20% within the same fiscal year; 30% once it has ended |
| Sudurpashchim | 3 months after the bluebook date or Chaitra end, whichever comes first. If the renewal date falls after Chaitra end, tax paid by Asar end has no fine; paid later, the fine counts from Chaitra end | 5% for the first 30 days, 10% for the next 45, 20% to the fiscal year end, then 30% for each later fiscal year, up to five |
A late renewal is charged separately. Renewing the bluebook after its deadline (3 months after the bluebook date, or 90 days in Koshi) adds 100% of the नवीकरण दस्तुर for each year late, up to 500%, in every province (Lumbini says up to five years). So a Rs 300 renewal fee becomes at least Rs 600 once you are late. A bluebook not renewed within those five years has its registration cancelled (in Lumbini, once the tax has gone unpaid past its five-year fine period).
Where the law is unclear
- Koshi says 20% "from the next fiscal year" without saying whether it repeats each year. The calculator charges it once per unpaid year.
- Madhesh, Sudurpashchim and Bagmati say 30%, 30% and 32% "for each fiscal year". The calculator reads that as adding up (32%, then 64%), not a flat rate. For Bagmati, news sources report it both ways.
- Karnali's finance act says a flat 30%; its vehicle act says 30% for each fiscal year up to five. The calculator uses the finance act's flat 30%.
- Gandaki's vehicle act puts the deadline at Chaitra end or the renewal deadline, while its finance act says 90 days after the bluebook date. The calculator uses the finance act's 90 days.
If a large amount depends on one of these readings, ask your transport office how it applies the rule before you pay.
Fine waivers open in 2083/84
- Lumbini: half of the fine on the tax is waived for payments made up to Chaitra end 2083. It does not reduce the late-renewal surcharge.
- Gandaki: for a bike that was already behind on 1 Shrawan 2083, paying by Baisakh end 2084 waives the fines on tax and renewal for years before 2083/84. The fine on the 2083/84 year itself still applies.
- Koshi: more than three years behind and paying by Jestha end 2084, the fines for the years before the last three are waived. Every year's tax and renewal fee is still charged.
- Sudurpashchim: five or more years unpaid, the fines on the tax and the renewal are waived in full when both are paid.
- Bagmati, Madhesh and Karnali have no general waiver for private bikes this year. Their reliefs are for taking a vehicle off the register: Bagmati for a lost or unusable two-wheeler by Poush end 2083, Madhesh by clearing the last three years by Mangsir end 2083, Karnali for a vehicle scrapped by Jestha 2084.
How do you work out the bike kar you owe?
Add the tax for your cc band, any fine on the tax, the renewal fee plus any late-renewal surcharge, and the insurance premium. Three worked examples:
- Karnali, 125cc, paid on time: Rs 2,700 tax + Rs 200 renewal = Rs 2,900. With third-party insurance of Rs 1,706, the total is Rs 4,606.
- Koshi, 150cc, paid 40 days late within the same fiscal year: the fine is 10% of Rs 5,100 = Rs 510. The renewal is also late, so the Rs 200 fee doubles to Rs 400. Rs 5,100 + Rs 510 + Rs 400 = Rs 6,010, before insurance.
- Lumbini, 125cc, bluebook date in Bhadra 2083, paid 20 days after the 90-day deadline and before Chaitra end 2083: the fine is 20% of Rs 3,000 = Rs 600, halved by the waiver to Rs 300. The renewal is late, so the Rs 300 fee becomes Rs 600. Rs 3,000 + Rs 300 + Rs 600 = Rs 3,900, and with Rs 1,706 insurance Rs 5,606.
If you missed a whole year, each missed year is charged separately with its own fine, and the renewal surcharge grows with the years late. The vehicle tax calculator works this out from your bluebook date and payment date for any province. For the renewal side on its own, see bike bluebook renewal price.
Third-party insurance
Third-party insurance is compulsory and national, not provincial. As insurers charge it, including VAT and stamp duty, it is Rs 1,706 for a motorcycle below 150cc, Rs 1,932 for 150–250cc and Rs 2,158 above 250cc. The FY 2083/84 budget raised third-party cover to Rs 10 lakh, and premiums may change when the Nepal Insurance Authority issues new rates.
How do you pay bike kar?
- Renew your third-party insurance so the policy is valid.
- Pay the tax to the transport office of the province where the bike is registered, with your bluebook. In Bagmati the act says the tax must be paid before the bluebook can be renewed or the bike transferred to a new owner.
- Renew the bluebook by paying the नवीकरण दस्तुर, on time if you can, since the late surcharge is separate from the tax fine.
- Keep the receipt.
Online payment in Bagmati: from 2083/84, tax paid online that shows in the Vehicle Registration System (VRS) removes the need for a physical bluebook renewal.
Online payment in Koshi: tax paid online on time carries no fine on the tax even if the bluebook is not renewed, but the late-renewal surcharge still applies, so renew the bluebook as well.
Other provinces set their own rules for online payment, so check with your province's transport office. For how the whole vehicle tax system works, including cars, see the vehicle tax in Nepal guide.
