Season Homestay

Season Homestay — Selling A Family, Not A Room

The Problem

A homestay competes with hotels on a completely different basis, and cannot win on the hotel’s terms. It has fewer rooms, fewer facilities and no reception desk. What it offers instead is a family home in Ramkot, home-cooked meals and being somewhere a tourist would not otherwise get to.

That is a harder sale, because the guest is not booking a room — they are agreeing to sleep in a stranger’s house, several kilometres from Thamel, on the strength of a website. A page listing wi-fi and hot water answers none of the questions they actually have, and invites a comparison the homestay loses.

What We Built

A site built around the experience rather than the accommodation — staying with a local family, home-cooked food, and the things a guest can actually do while there, including cooking classes.

The location is named precisely rather than approximated as “Kathmandu”: Ramkot, Nagarjun. A guest choosing a homestay wants to know they are outside the tourist strip, so specificity is an argument in favour rather than a disadvantage to be smoothed over.

The Decision That Shaped It

Affordability is stated openly instead of being dressed up. A homestay that presents itself as a boutique hotel invites hotel expectations and disappoints them; one that says plainly it is an affordable family stay with real food attracts the guest who wanted exactly that. Naming what it is not is what makes the offer legible.

What It Does

  • Rooms presented as part of a family stay rather than as hotel inventory
  • Home-cooked meals and Nepali hospitality as the core of the offer
  • Cooking classes and other activities as their own pages
  • Precise location — Ramkot, Nagarjun — stated as a feature, not hidden
  • Content management, so activities and pages are maintained by the family
