This tool uses the official Pearson PTE Academic to IELTS Academic concordance table, updated in 2024. It is the same reference most universities and visa authorities use. Note that concordance is a guide — each institution decides which test and what minimum score it accepts.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?

PTE is a fully computer-based test with AI scoring, which many candidates find less subjective than IELTS speaking in front of an examiner. Results come in 2 business days for PTE vs 3-13 days for IELTS. Difficulty is personal — if you type faster than you write and speak well on a microphone, PTE is usually faster to score on.

Which test do Australian universities accept?

Both PTE Academic and IELTS Academic are accepted by all Australian universities and by the Department of Home Affairs for student and skilled migration visas. Typical undergraduate entry requires IELTS 6.5 (or PTE 58), and most postgraduate programmes ask for IELTS 7.0 (PTE 65). Always check the specific course page.

What PTE score equals IELTS 7.0?

Under the Pearson concordance, an IELTS Academic overall band 7.0 is equivalent to a PTE Academic overall score of 65. For IELTS 6.5 you need PTE 58, for IELTS 7.5 you need PTE 73, and for IELTS 8.0 you need PTE 79.

Can I use this tool for PTE Core?

This calculator uses the PTE Academic concordance, which is the test accepted for university admission and most skilled migration streams including Australia and New Zealand. PTE Core is a different test (used for Canadian economic immigration and most Canadian work-related programmes) and has a separate concordance to CELPIP and IELTS General Training.

How the Calculator Works

This calculator uses Pearson's 2024 concordance table to map each PTE score band to its equivalent IELTS band (and vice-versa). For any section or overall score you enter:

PTE → IELTS: the PTE integer is matched to its anchor band; scores between anchor points return the lower band (conservative, matches how universities read your transcript).
IELTS → PTE: the IELTS half-band returns the minimum PTE required for that band, so if your target is IELTS 7.0, the tool shows PTE 65 (the floor).
Overall auto-calc: if you leave the Overall field blank, we compute it from the four sections you filled in (mean of 2 or more section scores).

For Nepali Students Applying Abroad

Most Nepali applicants weigh PTE vs IELTS based on test availability in Kathmandu, scoring turnaround, and university preference. Both tests are accepted by all Australian, UK, Canadian (PTE Academic only for student visa), and New Zealand universities. Typical minimums:
